A ten- minute film from US diretor Edwin S Porter is breaking new ground in film production. Called The Great Train Robbery it is set in the American West and the plot features cowboys and outlaws. The film is packed with action and supense: a robbery, a horseback escape, and a chase by the local posse are punctuated with fist- fights and gunplay Filming was done largely on location and clever editing gives the movie a realistic atmosphere not previously achieved. The highlight is when the chief outlaw turns towards the camera and fires his Colt revolver at point- blank range. The screen turns a bloody red, prompting screms from the audience! The formula has proved such a success that it seems certain we shall be seeing more films of this kind.
